Flood Resilient Homes at Sonbarsa Village, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh Aqueous communes are habitats that negotiate between land and water and attempt to make peace between them through Architecture. It is designed to accommodate prototype of 6 low income households admeasuring 50 Sq.m each and within the budget of Rs. 5,00,000 per house. Aqueous communes are designed as a typology that could creatively multiply along the landscapes of Sonbarsa and restore its resilience and develop into intimately stitched neighbourhood.

Gorakhpur District Is A Rapidly Growing Region In Mid-Gangetic Belt. Sonbarsa Village Sits At The Confluence Of River Rapti And Aami And Is Seasonally Affected By Riverine Floods. The Migrant Community Of Sonbarsa Who Lives In Low Lying Areas And Is Severely Affected With The Flooding, Water Logging, Asset Loss, Extreme Temperature, Poor Water Supply, Deteriorating Water Quality And Spread Of Water Borne Diseases.
The project operates with following strategies
1. Building city level resilience
Each residential plot earmarks 20% of land towards soaking and storing flood/rain water. These water bodies become rain water harvesting systems, which collect, store, purify and celebrate water.
2. Aqueous house typology
The house gradually rises above the ground too enable smooth flow of water beneath.
3. Neighbourhood formation
Aqueous communes create an intimately stitched social neighbourhood that revolve around the water body.
The Primary Aim Is Not Only To Design Flood Absorbing Ponds But Also Create Public Spaces For Everyday Lives. These Public Spaces Are For Everyone And Create A Sense Of Community Between All The Inhabitants Blurring The Boundaries Of Caste.
